A to Z of Dogs

A three-legged English setter named Zip was reunited with his owners after five days thanks to a missing-dog alert system based on the Amber Alert programme used for missing children.

Zip became separated from his owner during a hunting trip in New Hampshire.

Zip was picked up and transported to the Animal Rescue League in Dedham, Massachusetts on January 4, having been missing since New Years Eve. The shelter’s manager contacted Marshfield’s Animal Control Officer, Deni Goldman, who issued a SABER (Safe Animal Boadcast Emergency Response) Alert. Two hours later, the Alert was picked up by a dog care provider in Newton, who had seen a missing dog alert matching Zip’s description. Within hours, Goldman had contacted Zip’s owners and was able to reunite them.

Goldman says:

“This is why we developed the SABER Alert, and this is why we are so fortunate to have so many colleagues and affiliates across the state, and further, working with us. There is no better feeling than reuniting a family with their lost pet.”

A total of 633 SABER Alerts have been sent out since the system launched in 2006, and 34% of dogs have been reunited with their owners.
